Breaking news: All 4 Blackwater mercenaries found guilty in 2007 Iraq murders
WASHINGTON — Four former Blackwater Worldwide security contractors were convicted Wednesday on charges stemming from a deadly 2007 shooting in Iraq.
Federal court jurors found one defendant guilty of murder and three others of manslaughter and weapons charges, roundly asserting that the shooting was criminal. The defendants showed little emotion as the lengthy verdict was read.
Seventeen Iraqis died when gunfire erupted on Sept. 16, 2007 in the crowded Nisour Square in Baghdad. The shooting inflamed anti-American sentiment abroad and helped solidify the notion that Blackwater, America’s largest security contractor in Iraq, was reckless and unaccountable.

Shots fired in Canada’s capital building; injuries reported (video)
At least one person was injured Wednesday morning on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Canada after multiple shots were fired inside the main legislative building, according to media reports.
Parliament Hill’s Centre Block was on lockdown after shots were fired in the building, the Globe and Mail reported. A soldier standing guard at the nearby National War Memorial was also shot, according to the newspaper. It’s not clear at this point whether the two shootings are connected.
A witness told the Globe and Mail that the shooter at the War Memorial ran away from the scene toward Parliament Hill and appeared to be carrying a rifle.

When Romney struggled to raise funds [to start Bain Capital] from other traditional sources, he and his partners started thinking outside the box. Bain executive Harry Strachan suggested that Romney meet with a group of Central American oligarchs who were looking for new investment vehicles as turmoil engulfed their region.
By 1984, the media had thoroughly exposed connections between the death squads and the Salvadoran oligarchy, including the families that invested with Romney. The sitting U.S. ambassador to El Salvador charged that several families, including at least one that invested with Bain, were living in Miami and directly funding death squads. Even by 1981, El Salvador’s elite, largely relocated to Miami, were so angered by the public perception that they were financing death squads that they reached out to the media to make their case. The two men put forward to represent the oligarchs were both from families that would invest in Bain three years later. The most cursory review of their backgrounds would have turned up the ties.

Dragon successfully docs with space station in historic 1st
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The privately bankrolled Dragon capsule arrived at the International Space Station for a historic docking Friday, captured by astronauts wielding a giant robot arm.
It succeeded in making the first commercial delivery into the cosmos.
U.S. astronaut Donald Pettit used the space station’s 58-foot robot arm to snare the gleaming white Dragon after a few hours of extra checks and maneuvers. The two vessels came together while sailing above Australia.
“Looks like we’ve got us a dragon by the tail,” Pettit announced from 250 miles up once he locked onto Dragon’s docking mechanism.
“You’ve made a lot of folks happy down here over in Hawthorne and right here in Houston,” radioed NASA’s Mission Control. “Great job guys.”
NASA controllers clapped as their counterparts at SpaceX’s control center in Hawthorne, Calif. — including SpaceX’s billionaire maestro, Elon Musk, of PayPal fame — lifted their arms in triumph and jumped out of their seats to exchange high fives.
This is the first time a private company has attempted to send a vessel to the space station, an achievement previously reserved for a small, elite group of government agencies. And it’s the first U.S. craft to visit the station since the final shuttle flight last July.

Bass player Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn of Booker T. and the MGs dies in Tokyo
Bass player and songwriter Donald “Duck” Dunn, a member of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame band Booker T. and the MGs and the Blues Brothers band, has died in Tokyo. He was 70.
Dunn was in Tokyo for a series of shows. News of his death was posted on the Facebook site of his friend and fellow musician Steve Cropper, who was on the same tour. Cropper said Dunn died in his sleep.

Republican “solutions” are to give large corporations more power, allow them to pollute the environment, more tax cuts for the rich, fire government sector workers, ban abortion, oppress gays, cut spending on our infrastructure and education, and spend even more on defense. Those things do nothing to make our country better. They’re destroying our country.

Massive Gas Leak in the North Sea
Exclusion zones have been put in place around the Elgin platform in the North Sea, which has been suffering a serious gas leak since Sunday.
Coastguards said shipping was being ordered to keep at least two miles away and there was a three-mile exclusion zone for aircraft.
A cloud of gas was reported to be surrounding the platform, which is located 150 miles (240km) off Aberdeen.
Workers from a second platform and drilling rig have been removed.
Shell has moved 120 non-essential staff from the Shearwater platform and Hans Deul drilling rig, about four miles from the Elgin, because of the drifting gas.

How anyone could vote for a Republican is incomprehensible after all the damage they’ve inflicted on our country.

NPR Will No Longer Balance Facts With Right-Wing Spin On Facts
NPR [now] commits itself as an organization to avoid the worst excesses of “he said, she said” journalism. It says to itself that a report characterized by false balance is a false report. It introduces a new and potentially powerful concept of fairness: being “fair to the truth,” which as we know is not always evenly distributed among the sides in a public dispute.
Maintaining the “appearance of balance” isn’t good enough, NPR says. “If the balance of evidence in a matter of controversy weighs heavily on one side…” we have to say so. When we are spun, we don’t just report it. “We tell our audience…” This is spin!There was nothing like that in the old Code of Ethics and Practices.

The Reagan-Bush National Debt: 15.4 TRILLION DOLLARS!!!
The Reagan-Bush national debt now stands at 15.443 TRILLION DOLLARS. Ronald Reagan tripled the national debt back in the 1980s. George W. Bush has nearly tripled it with his reckless tax cuts, along with decreased revenues due to high unemployment, increased payout for unemployment benefits, the two wars, and Medicare Part D. We now pay $500 billion a year just on interest on the debt. Republicans have blocked all efforts to get the deficits under control.
The estimated population of the United States is 312,291,923 so each citizen’s share of this debt is $49,453.56.
The National Debt has continued to increase an average of 4 BILLION DOLLARS PER DAY since September 28, 2007!
