The Values That Made America Great Are Not Shared By Republicans

by Ben Hoffman

Obama made a great speech this evening about American values. If you didn’t see it, you can watch it here:

He talked about American values and how we used to be a country where if you worked hard and were honest, you could make a good life for yourself and your family. Those days are gone. Now we’re a country that rewards reckless behavior and it’s every man for himself. The tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 benefited the wealthiest and put us deep in debt while the rest of the country stagnated. The deregulation and lack of enforcement of existing regulations led to the near total collapse of our economy. And Republicans are fighting tooth-and-nail for any new taxes to help balance the budget and for regulation to prevent another catastrophe. Republicans and right-wingers want to destroy our democracy, which will destroy our country. We’re well on the way towards fascism and so are several other countries as a result of the worldwide economic recession. Right-wingers lie to defend their party just as they did back in 1930s Germany. Time will tell if the result will be the same.

  1. Actually, Republicans want this to be a country where if you work hard and are honest, you can make a good life for yourself and your family. They have no interest in destroying democracy or this country. I know it’s hard for you to believe that anyone could think there are different ways to accomplish our shared goals, but it’s true. Intelligent and informed people do not always agree.

    • Actually, Republicans want this to be a country where if you work hard and are honest, you can make a good life for yourself and your family.

Republicans have destroyed that ideal by structuring our trade and tax policies so most of the jobs where you could work hard to get ahead have been outsourced overseas. They’ve made it harder to get higher education and job training. They’ve done all they can to get wages and benefits lowered so that it’s harder to make a good life for yourself and your family.

  2. The reason jobs get outsourced overseas is that the labor is cheaper. For example, if I build cars and I need steel to build them, it is cheaper for me to buy steel made overseas, regardless of whether the company I buy it from is an American company or a foreign company. So, if I have to buy American materials to build cars, I can’t sell them as cheaply as foreign cars. So, I lose sales if I buy American-made steel.

Similarly, if, as a consumer, I want to buy a new DVD player, it is cheaper for me to buy one made overseas, since their labor costs are lower.

Do you only buy American-made goods? Or do you buy the products that are the best quality for the price you’re willing to pay? Most Americans buy that way, so the jobs have gone overseas.

Heck, it’s cheaper to buy solar arrays made in China than those that Solyndra tried to sell at a loss. They cost more to produce than they could sell them for AND they were still more expensive than the Chinese ones.

American workers are competing not against company owners (some of whom are Democrats! Oh my!), but against foreign workers. Some jobs are coming back because labor costs are going down and American workers are working both harder and smarter. It’s a slow process.
