Blagojevich Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison – Justice is Served

by Ben Hoffman

CHICAGO — Rod R. Blagojevich, the former governor of Illinois, was sentenced on Wednesday to 14 years in federal prison for 18 felony corruption convictions, including trying to sell or trade the Senate seat that President Obama left behind when he moved to the White House.

The sentence, which fell just short of what prosecutors had asked for, came about an hour after Mr. Blagojevich apologized in court to residents of his state, to the judge in his case and to his family.

“I have nobody to blame but myself for my stupidity and actions, words, things that I did, that I thought I could do,” he said.

Mr. Blagojevich’s crimes carried maximum sentences that could have stretched into hundreds of years behind bars, but federal prosecutors had argued that he deserved at least 15 to 20 years in prison. Mr. Blagojevich’s lawyers were seeking far less, saying simply that they were advocating for “the lowest sentence possible.”

Our country is based on democracy, and any time someone corrupts our elections, they should be put away for a long, long time. We have a few Supreme Court justices who should also be put behind bars.

  1. Mr. Hoffman,

Didn’t you leave out that Blagojevich was a Democrat ? Like big Wall Streeter John Corzine is a Democrat . He is now in front of a committee explaining where over a billion dollars of other people’s money went. Funny, when you post about Republicans you never forget to tell us which party they occupy.

Anyway, I want to know how Obama let the Corzine fiasco happen. In his famous April 2009 speech when he said America had shown arrogance, President Obama said that no longer would the world’s financial players be allowed to make risky bets at the expense of others. ” Those days are over ” . John Corzine made risky bets on European debt, and when his company’s risk manager dared to open his big mouth, he was terminated .

I thought those days were over. You can’t blame this on deregulation.

    • Alan, you want Obama to stop crimes before they are committed? The only thing they can do is punish criminals after they commit crimes, which is what is happening now. Funny how they just happen to go after one who’s a Democrat. Out of all the Wall Street criminals, they pick one who is a Democratic politician. What do you make of that, Alan?
