The Will of the People: Let Tax Cuts for the Rich Expire!

by Ben Hoffman

CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto.

While leaders in Washington remain divided over whether to let the Bush tax cuts expire for the wealthiest Americans, as President Obama has proposed, just over half of Americans think it is a good idea, a new CBS News/ New York Times poll shows.

The Bush tax cuts are set to expire at the end of the year, and Mr. Obama has strongly urged Congress to extend them for everyone except for Americans making more than $200,000 or households making more than $250,000. Republicans and some moderate Democrats, by contrast, have called for an extension of all the tax cuts.

Fifty-three percent of Americans agree with Mr. Obama that the tax cuts for the wealthy should be allowed to expire, while 38 percent do not, according to the poll, conducted Sept. 10-14.

Two of three Democrats think it is a good idea, and most independents (55 percent) agree. Most Republicans (57 percent) think it is a bad idea.

A small minority of Americans (19 percent) think it is a good idea to let the tax cuts expire for households earning under $250,000 a year – a policy no elected official in Washington is promoting, given the state of the economy.

Meanwhile, one third of Americans believe the Obama administration has raised taxes. Fifty percent think taxes have stayed the same, but only 8 percent think taxes have gone down. In fact, most Americans received a tax break in 2009.

  1. They are not “Cuts” because if they are not renewed your taxes go UP, if they are renewed NOTHING HAPPENS to your taxes. They DON”T GO DOWN. They are not “cuts!
So in show of total hyper-partisanship and a pie in the face to their own President the petulant little children in the House passed in a warp speed maneuver that would make the Picard Maneuver look like a turtle on Valium as they thumbed their collective noses at everyone and passed their “middle class tax cut” regardless.
The fact that it’s not a “cut” is perfectly ignored by Liberals in Congress and Liberals in the media.
But the petulant children did it anyways. You can almost see Pelosi just sticking her tongue and waggling her fingers at everyone.
So they passed what THEY want.
Gotta preserve that core addiction that Liberals have for Class Warfare.
And, it would definitely be a great boon to job seekers everywhere if there potential bosses taxes were raised right now. That will surely make everything much better!
And the unemployment rate just went up so raising taxes on the employers you want to hire people is definitely an incentive! 🙂

    • You’re just pissed because you live in that shit-hole called Phoenix.

    • So are you saying that by extending the Bush Era tax cuts, especially for those making $250,000 or more a year, that this will have some kind of magical effect on the economy, that it will lead these larger stake holders in the economy to start to hire and rehire those who are currently unemployed?

      Seems doubtful…

Liberals as having an addiction to class warfare…?

Seems a strange understanding of how elites from either side of the political spectrum wage their wars of ideology. It’s always power against the less than powerful, whether Democrat or Republican.

  2. How about responding to my post for once, instead of the childish and churlish little snotty replies.
