A sign of things to come: reporter arested by security guards

by Ben Hoffman

Fascism is coming to America. Say goodbye to free speech and and democracy. During the Bush administration, Americans were arrested for having anti-Bush bumper stickers on their cars. Yesterday, Joe Miller’s private security guards arrested a reporter for asking Miller a question he didn’t like.

Here’s the story:

The editor of the Alaska Dispatch website was arrested by U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller’s private security guards Sunday as the editor attempted to interview Miller at the end of a public event in an Anchorage school.

Tony Hopfinger was handcuffed by the guards and detained in a hallway at Central Middle School until Anchorage police came and told the guards to release Hopfinger.

[…]

Hopfinger, who was holding a small video camera, said he was attempting to draw out a statement from Miller on why he was disciplined by the Fairbanks North Star Borough when Miller worked there as a part-time attorney. After Miller walked away, Hopfinger said, he was surrounded by Miller supporters and security guards and felt threatened, so he pushed one of them away.

Hopfinger said that after he shoved the man away, the guards grabbed him, cuffed his hands behind his back with steel handcuffs and sat him in a chair in the school hallway, Hopfinger said.

One of the guards grabbed Hopfinger’s video camera. Later, Hopfinger said that when he got the camera back, the segment covering the span of the arrest was missing. An Anchorage police officer offered to take the camera into custody and have it examined in the crime lab to investigate whether evidence had been destroyed, but Hopfinger declined. He said he needed the camera and the remaining video for his work.

[update]

Here is a video. It appears the guards were impersonating police officers.

  1. “so he pushed one of them away. Hopfinger said that after he shoved the man away…”

Appears that Hopfinger could be charged with battery. Pushing and shoving. One should not expect to get away with shoving a security guard.

On a related matter, NY Democrat congressman Maurice Hinchey has yet to face the music for physically assaulting a reporter last week. Or didn’t you hear about that one? Surely that’s the only reason you didn’t mention that assault…you didn’t know of it b/c the Lame Stream Media ignored it.

Surely you would have pointed out this Democrat congressman assaulting a reporter. Wouldn’t you?

    • [Appears that Hopfinger could be charged with battery. Pushing and shoving.]

Ooooh, pushing and shoving. How about pulling hair. What a meanie!

[On a related matter, NY Democrat congressman Maurice Hinchey has yet to face the music for physically assaulting a reporter last week.]

Had to look it up. Apparently, Hinchey the assault consisted of poking him in the chest. Oh no! A poke in the chest!

      You’re a moron.

  2. From the moron,

Typical. You excuse the assault since it’s a Demn doing it. Yeah, you had to look it up since the lame stream media has not reported it widely.

As for Alaska, look up the definition of battery if you don’t know. Or is it ok for a reporter to push and shove in your liberal mind? Would it be ok for the R candidate to push and shove the reporter?

You’re consistently biased, I’ll give you that.

    • No, the issue here isn’t the shoving. It’s that the reporter was put in handcuffs. That is illegal. And he didn’t just push the guards for no reason. They were trying to intimidate him by chest-bumping him and getting in his face.

  3. Security guards puffing someone is not illegal.

    Aw, poor baby felt intimidated.

I have seen nowhere about him being “chest bumped.” Where did you get that tidbit?

Are you as outraged about the Den in NY grabbing the reporter by the throat?

  4. BTW, I don’t condone any politician bullying reporters. Whether r or d

  5. So you still have you’re “Bush is a Chimp” bumpersticker then, eh? 🙂
