Christian Terrorism: Fla. church plans to burn Qurans on 9/11 anniversary

by Ben Hoffman

(RNS) A Florida church with “Islam is of the devil” signs in its front lawn plans to host an “International Burn A Quran Day,” on the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks this year.

The Dove World Outreach Center, a non-denominational church in Gainesville, has marked the date in previous years with protests against Islam. The church holds protests on other issues, such as homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and abortion.

Pastor Terry Jones said members of the church plan to be at the Gainesville City Hall on Aug. 2 to protest the election of the city’s openly gay mayor. Church-state groups had previously accused the church of illegal politicking for its “No Homo Mayor” signs.

Jones, who is also the author of a book titled “Islam is of the Devil,” said protests are key to the mission of his church.

“We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn,” said Jones.
The goal of these and other protests are to give Muslims an opportunity to convert, he said.

On May 10, a pipe bomb exploded in the Islamic Center of Northwest Florida in Jacksonville. No worshippers were hurt, but Kilic said the planned burning of Qurans could escalate tensions in the area.

  1. From ABS:

[“According to information available to the US government, Tehrik-e Taliban plans to conduct attacks against foreigners participating in the ongoing flood relief operations in Pakistan,” the official said on Wednesday (local time) on condition of anonymity.

“Tehrik-e Taliban also may be making plans to attack federal and provincial ministers in Islamabad.”]

  2. While this guy is totally rude and wrong, I’m not entirely sure how he is a terrorist. What is he doing to create fear or terror? He’s just being an @$$.

It would appear that our author is only concerned with religious bigotry when directed at non-Christians.

    • I have to agree, pino. Christians in America are nice people and every time we look, they get the ax.
Moslems on the other hand have created nothing but bad feelings on this matter.

Christians are NOT terrorists, they did not blow through our trade towers and murder over 3000 Americans.

Ben, the same argument can be used against the Jewish faith as well, that some man named Moshe raised a stick and parted a whole sea.

What are you, Ben, INSANE? “Locked away in mental institutions?”
      Are you kidding?!

…They came for the Jews…comes to mind.
Christians and Catholics SAVED our people in NAZI Germany Ben, while the Grand Mufti aligned himself with Hitler, YOU owe your life here in the galut to Christians, and need to practice humility!!

      • [Christians and Catholics SAVED our people in NAZI Germany Ben,]

Maybe in your alternate right-wing reality, but in the real world, Hitler was Catholic. He and many of his key associates attended Christian services of the nazified Reich Church.

      • Christians in America are nice people and every time we look, they get the ax.

Wow, making gross generalizations and mentioning the persecution meme all in one sentence. Bravo.

        Christians are NOT terrorists,

Some are. Making categorical statements with incomplete knowledge is sloppy argumentation.

Christians and Catholics SAVED our people in NAZI Germany Ben,

I believe it was actually the U.S Army that had a part in saving people. One should also not forget the Russians who played the largest role and did most of the dying in WW2.

while the Grand Mufti aligned himself with Hitler

He, along with the pope as well, so what is your point?

        and need to practice humility!!

Practice humility when faced with asinine arguments and preposterous assertions? One should be congratulating Ben on the charity he shows by publishing the specious commentary that often flows around here.

  4. Pointing out the truth to Ben must really sting for him. Maybe he should give more thought before trotting out these kinds of stories.

    • You’re supporting these Christian terrorists. We must join together and defeat them. Otherwise, we’re going to lose our country.

These people are crazy. They believe that some guy about 2,000 years ago was born to a virgin mother and rose from the dead three days after he was given the death sentence for crimes he committed against the state. It’s crazy stuff. These people should be locked away in mental institutions.

      • Jesus committed NO crime against the state. His so called crimes were one, the pharisees wanted him silenced because they were losing control of the church to Jesus The Christ. Learn you history Ben.

  5. “They believe that some guy about 2,000 years ago was born to a virgin mother and rose from the dead three days…”

I can’t speak to the validity of their faith, but that part of the sentence expresses my faith quite well. The bible says that the gospel (that Jesus lived a sinless life and willingly died on the cross for sinners and was resurrected, is a “stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles.” I don’t know which you are in, but surely one of those two groups.

    • The police report shows he was kicking and screaming and cried like a little girl before being executed.

      • The police report shows he was kicking and screaming and cried like a little girl before being executed.

Ahhh, the sweet smell of tolerance and peace in the late summer evening.

      • Pino: Ahhh, the sweet smell of tolerance and peace in the late summer evening.

Ben, I do believe that Pino is at least mildly offended by your tone. Please, in the future, show a little more respect to the appropriate mythological sky-daddy and associated magic book.

  6. Does anyone get all riled up at the hate directed at Jews? FBI “hate crime” stats,

Of the 1,732 victims of anti-religious hate crimes:

66.1 percent were targeted because of an offender’s
    anti-Jewish bias.

7.5 percent were victims because of an anti-Islamic bias.
5.1 percent were victims because of an anti-Catholic bias.
3.6 percent were victims because of an anti-Protestant bias.

0.8 percent were targeted because of an anti-Atheist/Agnostic bias.

2.8 percent were victims because of a bias against other religions (anti-other religion).

4.0 percent were victims because of a bias against groups of individuals of varying religions (anti-multiple religions, group).

This frenzy to protect the Muslims seems disproportionate compared to the silence about hate directed towards Jews.

  7. So many people talk about the hate…where and when did Jesus, or Mohamed say Hate thy neighbor. Kill before you are killed, or strike fear into the heart of your neighbor. The Qu’oran, the Bible, the Torah, and just about EVERY religious Holy text teaches one main theme. LOVE EACH OTHER AS FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

    • Jesus: “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:26)

The old testament: Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.” (Psalms 139:19-22)

      The qu’ran;
39 times in chapter 2 alone does it mention burning nonbelievers, I won’t even bother quoting it as someone who thinks the qu’ran teaches only love has never read a sentence of it and should not be disseminating his ignorance.

The main theme of every succesful religion is violence and subversion, not love. This is necessary for propogation as a peaceful religion will quickly go out of fashion. However, a religion that punishes leaving with the death penalty and hell fire for eternity can remain popular for thousands of years.

  8. Islam is a religion of peace, anyone who says anything bad about it is an islamophobic bigot!

I’ll show you opinion polls that prove how peaceful it is and how misrepresented muslims have been in the media.

The 5 least peaceful countries on Earth are Islamic, even though the statistics didnt take violence against women and children into account.

Gallup survey can’t find a single British Muslim who approves of homosexuality.

68% of american muslims support the death penalty against homosexuals.

Only 70% of muslims in uk against suicide bombing.

A quarter of British Muslims sympathise with the motives of the London bombers.

Not a single mosque in America accepts homosexuals.

    WOOPS!

    • Islam is NOT a ‘peaceful’ religion.

they are always spouting how their ‘g’od is the same God as the Hebrew/ Jewish~Christian GOD, if that is so, why do they want Christians and Jews to convert to Islam?

      • Islam is NOT a ‘peaceful’ religion.

Christianity is not a particular peaceful religion either. The difference is that christianity as we have it over here in the West, is kept in check (most of the time, some would say not enough by the amount of absurdity going on in the US and Canada) by a rational secular state and secular laws that keep the level of religiously inspired stupidity to a tolerable level .

Take away the secular basis of the state, even in the US and you are on the same trajectory as Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan although the sky-daddies and magic books are marginally different.

they are always spouting how their ‘g’od is the same God as the Hebrew/ Jewish~Christian GOD

Does it really matter? It is like arguing that Easter Bunny is real and Santa Claus is not; and vice versa. Arguing over whose made up version of god is better creates only intolerance and sectarian squabbling, both that significantly detract from reasonable discourse.

  9. Christians and Catholics SAVED our people in NAZI Germany Ben- I repeat.

Schindler was a CATHOLIC. Sendler was a CHRISTIAN. America fought the NAZIS. America is a CHRISTIAN nation, anybody with half a brain KNOWS that Shitler was NOT following the New Testament.

Koo-Koo Ben, stop drinking the Bolshie/Juice that they shove down your throat.

  10. Corrie Ten Boom ALSO a CHRISTIAN. A REAL one, Ben.

How could you really believe that Shitler represented the Christian or Catholic faiths?

    Are you insane?!!!

    • How could you really believe that Shitler represented the Christian or Catholic faiths?

Not bothering to look at the historical record and repeating nonsense in a thread would be closer to insane by most rational standards.

      • @Arbor: Not bothering to look at the historical record and repeating nonsense in a thread would be closer to insane by most rational standards…

Glad to see that you are coming to terms with yourself.
Projection often leads to confession, and soon you will be free from this insanity and irrationality where your woes are vexing your soul.

Since you are now on the subject of dumping on Christians, which is what the sweet liberal folk have been doing to them for YEARS, please point out the scriptures in the New Testament that would lead you to believe that Christianity is this bad book and faith that the liberals make it out to be.

  11. TMJ:Glad to see that you are coming to terms with yourself.

Way not to answer a challenge.

YEARS, please point out the scriptures in the New Testament that would lead you to believe that Christianity is this bad book and faith

Hmmm…how about one concept. The New Testament introduces Hell.

This particularly mendacious concept has causes a great deal of suffering and anxiety and fear… for no good reason wherever the taint of christianity happens to be.

That would qualify the new testament as a bad book.

    • Just in case we are going to be all picky and what not:

Jesus strongly approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn’t the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament. Matthew – 5:17

That means all the slavery, genocide, torture from the old testament is a-okay with Jesus.

Jesus says that most people will go to hell. Matthew 7:13-14

Well isn’t that a sunny little prediction.

Jesus will send his angels to gather up “all that offend” and they “shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 13:41-42, 50

      Wow, the cruelty continues.

Jesus tells us what he has planned for those that he dislikes. They will be cast into an “everlasting fire.” 25:41

All of this, and we are not even out of the book of Matthew yet.

Jesus says the damned will be tormented forever. 25:46

Hey there ya go. Obviously people deserve to be tormented forever. What a happy nice shiny book filled with love for all…

Or just a set up to scare people into believing in some pretty screwed up bullcookery. Yes, that sounds about right.
