The Right-Wing Effort To Bring Down the Obama Presidency

by Ben Hoffman

Right-wingers don’t accept political defeat honorably. Gone are the days of working for the good of the country, even if the other party won. The losing side used to be known as the loyal opposition. Loyalty was to the country back then — not to the party. Now it’s non-stop political campaigns.

The party first mentality began in the early 90s during the Clinton presidency. Republicans did everything they could to bring down the popular Democrat’s presidency. They spent some 60 million of our tax dollars investigating Clinton’s personal life. They turned up some trivial scandals — none of which affected his job, but they kept these scandals on the front page of almost all the newspapers and they were the headline stories on the evening news. We can only imagine would it would have been like if there wasn’t the “liberal bias” in the news media.

Their strategy worked. Although Clinton’s approval rating remained high throughout his presidency, people were tired of all the scandals. The media basically handed George W. Bush the presidency (along with the Supreme Court).

Now we see the same strategy by the right to bring down Barack Obama. It appears to be working. People are blaming Obama for the huge deficits and even the debt accumulated by his predecessors. Nobody paid much attention to the debt during Bush’s administration while he was doubling it, but now it’s of dire concern since we have a Democrat in the White House. While something definitely needs to be done about the huge deficits (roll back the Bush tax cuts), right now we need to focus on putting people back to work. It the government cuts spending now, that will mean higher unemployment.

Republicans seem to be blaming everything on Obama just to see what sticks. They blame the deficits, the debt, the failed terrorist attacks, and now the oil disaster on Obama. Informed voters see through this, right-wingers perpetuate and propagate the lies, and the low-information voters (otherwise known as independents) vote according to the prevailing winds and ultimately determine elections.

So what can be done to save our democracy? Pass some honesty in media laws? Election reform? I don’t know. People believe what they want to believe.

  1. So true! Even the republicans who speak out against the excessive spending during the Bush administration kept quiet out of partisan “loyalty.” Or perhaps they thought it might draw unwanted attention to the fact that the Clinton administration left us with a budget SURPLUS!

  2. [We can only imagine would it would have been like if there wasn’t the “liberal bias” in the news media.]

Let us not forget that as far as Whitewater, the beginning of all the Clinton scandals, was driven by the NY Times. And the endless belittling of Clinton as ‘simply not one of us’ was a constant theme of Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd.

Real reporting was out there, but we both know how the Times drives the news cycle.

  3. I’ve noticed this theme with Obama talking about the partisanship against Government . Totally stupid . Liberals have convenient memories . George Bush was fighting two wars and Hypocrats went after him and the war effort to score political points .

This is like little kids that hit others and do not want to be hit back .

    • [George Bush was fighting two wars and Hypocrats went after him and the war effort to score political points .]

Hmmmmm… I don’t remember Bush ever fighting in a war. I know he started a few. One he lied us into. Both he managed with an incompetence never before seen in our country and at a cost of over a trillion dollars, 4,000 American lives, not to mention all the innocent Iraqis who were killed, all of which made us less safe. But I don’t remember Bush ever “fighting” in a war. He was able to avoid fighting in Vietnam because of his father’s influence.

  4. So what was all that liberal libel and slander between 2000-2009 against republicans then?
    Honorable?
    Patriotic?
    “Informed”?
Or just more demagoguery from the PhD’s in demagoguery who are now the “victims” and not the perps.

  5. Now this is funny stuff.
Here Bush (weasel) gets railed on for not actually fighting in a war; yet as usual the draft dodger Clinton gets a pass, and Obama’s selective service registration is an obvious fake.
Bill Clinton lied under oath…hello felony…and only influence and pressure on the prosecutors kept him from being indicted and getting jail time. Oh, and he WAS impeached. The list of people that were personally involved with the Clintons that are now deceased is staggering, if you care to do any research, (rrigghtt) the list is readily available.
Of course Bush was a spending freak, but the only reason Clinton managed a “surplus” was because the Republicans held his feet to the fire for the Balanced Budget.
Obama is bringing down his own presidency, with his ridiculous policies. Is is hilarious to hear that “Bush lied” (there’s no doubt he is one) … but literally EVERYTHING that proceeds out of the mouth of the current fraud-in-chief is a documented lie.
This post is like the pot calling the kettle black.

  6. [Obama’s selective service registration is an obvious fake]

Whoa Steve! This one is entirely new to me. Double whammy, eh? Fake birth certificate too.

    • Obama’s selective service registration must be a fake because there was no mandatory registration at the time.

      • The requirement to register was suspended in 1975 and reinstated in 1980.

I just wonder why he said this: “I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school…in 1979.”

Ah, he probably just “mispoke” again.

      • I was one of the few who didn’t have any obligation to register, but on doing a little research, Obama did in fact register. But who gives a f*ck, anyway? Bush went AWOL and that never amounted to anything.

  7. Mr. Hoffman,

” Right-wingers don’t accept political defeat honorably. Gone are the days of working for the good of the country, even if the other party won. The losing side used to be known as the loyal opposition. Loyalty was to the country back then — not to the party. Now it’s non-stop political campaigns. ”

Again President Bush was fighting two wars and was attacked during War Time strictly for Political Gain . Tell me that there was any other reason ? Left-Wingers did not accept defeat honorably . What did they care about the good of the country ?

Tell me, did Republicans attack FDR during WW2 ? If Republicans had done to FDR 1/100 of what Democrats did to Bush, I wonder what the country would have thought of them. I wonder if they would have been interred with Japanese Americans, I say they would have .

And let us talk about this latest terrorist . We are extremely lucky that he and the underwear bomber were so incompetent . On the scene law enforcement did very well . Obama level enforcement got very lucky ” again “. They knew who this guy was before he went to the airport, yet he still was able to board the plane .

I now use this latest Islamic Terrorist to Defend President Bush’s policy of going after America’s Islamic enemies overseas.

Just what was the difference between the last two bombers, and the 1993 WTC and 911 terrorists ? It was training and support . Prior to 911 and going back into the early 90s, Islamic Terrorists had sophisticated training and support systems . They had the infrastructure and financing to select and train Terrorists who could detonate the 1993 bomb and also pull off the 911 plot . There were also the bombings in Africa . It took quite a lot to do that.

Now lets look at the present . Thanks to George Bush’s wars in Iran and Afghanistan and Pakistan, Islamic Terrorists have been so degraded in their training and financing that they have failed to even detonate their explosives . This is exactly the opposite of what every Democrat politician and Democrat so called news person said would happen . Remember how Bush’s wars were just recruiting more terrorists ????????

Well I have to say that Bush inspired Terrorists don’t seem to measure up to the guys recruited and trained before Bush took office .

Tell me Mr. Hoffman, do you think the drop in quality had anything to do with killing the SOBs ” over there ” .

  8. [Tell me Mr. Hoffman, do you think the drop in quality had anything to do with killing the SOBs ” over there ” .]

Maybe they’re cutting quality to try to increase profits. 🙂

  9. I liked the left-wing effort to bring down the Bush Presidency: John Kerry, and Cindy Sheehan. 🙂

  10. So why aren’t the drone attacks, carried out since Obama has been President, responsible for recruiting more Islamic Terrorists ? I bet this NY Bomber was recruited under Bush,,,,,,right ????

Why hasn’t Obama left Iraq and Afghanistan ? Why isn’t the jobless rate below 8% ?

Why are so many Congressional Democrats picking this year to retire ????? Why doesn’t Obama just lower the sea levels and scoop up the oil slick with payloaders ?

Why hasn’t Obama’s boot on the neck of BP stopped the leaking oil well ?

  11. Wow, there certainly is a lot of vigorous debate on this site!
Bottom line for me is that Bush called those who disagreed with him unpatriotic. Obama has gone pretty far to reach out to those who disagree with him.

    • In my life, I can’t remember a president who had as much on the table in the first year. And he’s handling it. Cool, dispassionate and – I hope! – calculating.

      • “Calculating” … finally, a perfect description of his actions.

      • Steve – I WANT him to be calculating. Of course if he’s doing it now and doing it well, it will be invisible until he makes us all gay marry each other! (thank god I’m too old!)

    • [Obama has gone pretty far to reach out to those who disagree with him.]

The only thing that matters to Republicans is the next election, and their strategy is to just say no to everything.

    • Huh???
he’s ‘reaching out to those who disagree with him’?
holy moly! jesus, joseph, and mary lou!
you have to be joking poke-her-face.

  12. Ms. Holland,

” n my life, I can’t remember a president who had as much on the table in the first year. And he’s handling it. ”

    🙂
