Republicans Hate Unions More Than They Hate Terrorists

by Ben Hoffman

Even after the failed terrorist attack on Christmas day, Republicans are still blocking the appointment to the head of the Transportation Security Administration because they’re afraid the nominee might unionize the TSA.

An attempt to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day would be all-consuming for the administrator of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) — if there were one.

The post remains vacant because Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., has held up President Obama’s nominee in opposition to the prospect of TSA workers joining a labor union.

It makes you wonder why Republicans hate the middle class so much. With unions, employees can demand a living wage. Currently, most airport security workers make about $12 an hour, which is not enough to live on in most cities so many of these workers need to work more than one job to get by. Republicans would rather see another terrorist attack than have workers earn a decent wage.

Republicans have shown they are weak on terrorism and disaster response. Republicans allowed us to be attacked in 2001 after the some 50 warnings. Republicans showed they’re incompetent when it comes to disaster response as demonstrated by their response to Hurricane Katrina. Republicans have shown that they love their party more than they love their country as demonstrated by their reaction to the failed terrorist attack on Christmas. They’d rather use it to try to make Obama look bad than to try to work with Democrats to improve security.

Republicans would like to see our country attacked again because they have convinced a lot of people that they’re the party that can protect us better, even though they’re the party that allowed our country to be attacked in 2001 — the ONLY major attack on the United States civilians in our history.

  1. Omg, Ben. I see you’ve undertaken an enormous task in your four-parter. Haven’t read it yet, but will read every word. Happy New Year and thanks for hosting all the fun these last few months.

  2. So do you blame Clinton for the USS Cole?

  3. Better yet:
    1993
    1995
    1996
    1998
    2000
    2009

Do you blame Bush or Republicans for all of these?

  4. Mr. Hoffman,

On another topic, you asked me why Republicans were blocking Obama’s TSA nominee. I am still working on it. I wish you had given me more information to start with. I have dug up some background for now.

The TSA under the Bush Administration has had a troubled life. This continues under Obama. It handles baggage screeners. They have a high turnover of employees. Gale Rossides Deputy Administrator for the TSA, is it’s acting head. On Dec. 16 of this year she testified about the embarrassing posting online of secret airport screening procedures.

Erroll Southers is the guy being blocked by Senator Jim DeMint. He seems qualified by experience. The only black mark I have found is that he once misused his position to investigate the boyfriend of his then estranged wife.

The unionization issue that DeMint has with Southers, I have not as yet found enough details to make a comment on.

    • You don’t have to look far. DeMint said it himself. Issued a statement. Check his website.

He put on the hold because, in testimony, Southers refused to say he would block any attempts at collective bargaining by employees of the TSA.

  5. Ms. Holland,

Thank you for the information, but I believe there has to be more to it. On the surface Republicans are saying that they don’t want another episode like when Reagan fired the air traffic controllers. I am not satisfied with the material I am finding.

Also since the Nigerian terrorist boarded overseas, the TSA is not implicated in the failure of the rest of American Intelligence, so the blocking of President Obama’s nominee is a non factor in that case.

Yes, keep looking until you find something that makes Democrats look bad and Republicans look good, and those will be the “facts,” even if it’s just from some unknown schmuck’s opinion blog.

    • TSA has final responsibility on the no fly lists.

  6. I don’t think the TSA’s situation improves by unionizing its employees since I’ve found when most jobs become unionized they become safe havens for the lazy and the incompetent (Exceptions here are police and fire). Airports are the last place we need both.

  7. Mr. Hoffman,

“Yes, keep looking until you find something that makes Democrats look bad and Republicans look good, and those will be the “facts,” even if it’s just from some unknown schmuck’s opinion blog.”

It’s what I do. 🙂 What is it you do again ? Look up something that blames Bush for whatever the Marxist brothers Barak, Harry, and Nancy have blow up in their faces. I know, I know, how can Nancy be a brother? Poetic license.

“TSA has final responsibility on the no fly lists.”

    I stand corrected.

  8. I dont hate Unions, Unions made America great— at one time.

  9. Oh, by the way, the administration just withdrew Erroll Southers nomination. Seems like a show of political weakness. Where is that “we won” attitude now?
