Right-Winger In Virginia Post Office Releases Hostages And Surrenders

by Ben Hoffman

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – Warren “Gator” Taylor was tired of driving, so he pulled off the interstate in this Blue Ridge Mountain town to buy gas and food. The Tennessee man had been angry at the government for months, even years, federal officials said Thursday, and this seemed like as good a place as any to use the handguns and mock explosives he had packed in his beloved red pickup.

He had no apparent connection to Wytheville, but the picturesque community of 8,500 reminded him of the tourist town of Gatlinburg, Tenn., three hours away. So after breakfast at a local eatery and a steak at Applebee’s, he pushed his wheelchair through the door of the post office Wednesday afternoon, officials said, slammed what looked like a bomb on the counter and took three people hostage.

Just over eight hours later, after demanding only a pizza he shared with his captives and a pack of cigarettes for a hostage who smoked, he let them go, wheeled himself outside in his chair and surrendered.

The gunman said he had no money, and his 2007 red Dodge diesel pickup truck was about to be repossessed. Mostly, he railed against the government β€” high taxes, gun control, and President Barack Obama.

Now how did this guy develop such a hatred for government and specifically, Obama? There’s no mention of this, but chances are, right-wing pundits such as Hannity and Beck probably fueled his hatred with lies, fear, and hate mongering. After all, Obama cut taxes on the lower middle class, hasn’t proposed any kind of changes to gun rights, and most of what Obama has done and plans on doing will benefit people like Taylor the most.

At least the situation ended peacefully. This time.

  1. Ben;
Just stopping by to wish you and your family a great Christmas and a very happy New Year.

  2. Mr. Hoffman,

“The gunman said he had no money, and his 2007 red Dodge diesel pickup truck was about to be repossessed.”

I don’t think the guy is a right winger necessarily. Just a financially stressed man who snapped and is using anti-government rhetoric to vent his frustration.

I don’t know, but I could just as well label him a frustrated Obama voter who is disillusioned that Obama’s promises on turning the economy around are as yet unfulfilled. That makes as much sense as blaming Hannity and Beck. I know an awful lot of Obama voters who are gun people.

I sure would like to know where a guy like this got the loan to be driving a 2007 Diesel Dodge. That is not a cheap truck.

  3. Mr. Hoffman,

You lefties make a lot of outrageous charges on the smallest pieces of evidence.

    You said,

“Now how did this guy develop such a hatred for government and specifically, Obama? There’s no mention of this, but chances are, right-wing pundits such as Hannity and Beck probably fueled his hatred with lies, fear, and hate mongering.”

The only evidence that you cited was this. ” Mostly, he railed against the government β€” high taxes, gun control, and President Barack Obama.”

You are not the only Liberal to make unproven charges. I found this. http://buzzflash.net/story.php?id=1060802

“Damn right this nitwit is a Tea Bagger, a conservative and a Republican. He told his hostages he was angry over taxes, Barack Obama and big government. Especially the government taking over our right to bear arms. Any of that ring a bell in your political travels? Gosh… Any doubt this guy was egged on to this by talk radio, Tea Bag rallies and Sarah Palin rhetoric?
    tags: republican, tea party”

I went searching for the truth about Mr.Taylor. I could find no evidence that he was a Republican, attended Tea Party rallies, or had his hatred fueled by listening to Sean Hannity and Glen Beck.

What I found was a mentally disturbed man with a criminal history of violence, who is a registered sex offender.

I ask you to give proof of your charge that Mr. Taylor is a right winger whose rampage you implied was caused by Hannity and Beck. If you can’t, then retract it.

Your next to last comment is rather telling considering you did not have your facts in order.

“Obama has done and plans on doing will benefit people like Taylor the most.”

    Helping mentally disturbed violent offenders?

    • [The only evidence that you cited was this. ” Mostly, he railed against the government β€” high taxes, gun control, and President Barack Obama.”]

Those are the core tenets of right-wing ideology: government is bad, taxes are too high, and liberals want to take away our guns. I guarantee you this guy is a right-winger.
